(1.0p) The Cu Chi Tunnels are part of a massive war museum in Ho Chi Minh, which has been preserved by the government of Vietnam, and turned into a war memorial park with two different tunnel display sites, Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc. They offer visitors a sneak-peek at the underground life of Vietnamese soldiers back in 1948. The site has over 120km of underground tunnels, with trapdoors, living areas, kitchens, storage facilities, armoury, hospitals, and command centres. After the war against the French, Vietnamese soldiers expanded the tunnels and included effective air filtration systems, which helped them survive the Cu Chi carpet-bombings. The Ben Duoc site contains part of the original tunnel system, while the Ben Dinh site, closer to Saigon urban sites, has their reconstructions made larger to accommodate tourists. In both sites low-power lights have been installed in the tunnels to make traveling through them easier, and both sites have displays of the different types of booby traps that were used. Underground conference rooms where campaigns such as the New Year Offensive were planned in 1968 have been restored, and visitors may enjoy a simple meal of food that Vietnamese former soldiers would have eaten. The Cu Chi Tunnels is now one of Ho Chi Minh’s most iconic attractions. You can enjoy plenty of activities during your visit. A popular option is following the narrow routes of the underground tunnel. Before entering the underground tunnels, visitors watch a short film of the Cu Chi Tunnels so that they understand how the tunnel system works.
